Kate Fletcher

Make Up Artist

Why she's GOT it:

In between her hectic schedule, Melbourne make-up artist Kate Fletcher finds inspiration in music, magazines, and morning soy lattes. And when it comes to make-up, Kate says "it's not permanent - if you're not loving it, wash it off and start again"

Things you should know about Kate Fletcher:

What is your earliest memory of make-up?
As young as I can remember, I used to always be so fascinated watching my Mum apply her makeup every morning. One day my fascination took over and I helped myself to my Mum's lipsticks. I bit the tops off all of Mum's lipsticks to sample a taste. Yes they didn't taste so good and yes I was in a lot of trouble...haha
You lived in London for a long time. What inspired you about the city?
I found London to be an inspiring city due to its culture, diversity and influencing surroundings, along with its neighbouring cities. I enjoyed many short trips and weekends over to Europe.
You recently travelled to New York for work and pleasure. What is one your must do list?
New York is my favourite city. Be sure to pack your sneakers when visiting NY and plenty of spending money if you like to shop. The night life is incredible, never short of things to do in NY. If makeup and products excite you too, then be sure to pay a visit to SEPHORA. I spend hours at a time in there, Heaven!! AND if you're in NYC, be sure to try their pizza...
Beauty regime you swear will save our face?
Cleanse your face both morning and night. It's a must. Instead of a daily moisturiser, try a vitamin C serum for your face (apply every morning after cleansing). Great antioxidant for your skin.
What is your must have beauty item for the Summer season?
For summer we all love for our skin to look bronzed with a glow, head to toe. NARS have a couple great body lotions/creams. Try either BODY GLOW or BODY ILLUMINATOR, and for a cheaper alternative SPORTSGIRL BODY GLOW SHIMMER CREAM, works well mixed in with a body moisturiser.
Who would be the one face you would choose to work on right now?
I have too many I'd love to work with, Kate Moss, Natalia Vodianova, Natalia Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr and of course Abbey Lee Kershaw...the list goes on.
In an industry that is so hard to crack, how do you stay focused?
To always have a positive frame of mind. Remind yourself of your goals, have patience, and to be passionate about your work. I love my job.

Things you should know about Roos Van Montfort:

You grew up in a small township – what was life like?
I think its very healthy growing up in a small town rather than a big city. I didn't think the same way back then as I do now. Now that I live in a city I realize how nice it actually is living in a village where people care and know each other. I love London though, and its perfect for me at this stage in my life
Moving to London at such a young age would have been very daunting, who and what did you draw support from?
My friends and family have been very supportive and my dad even encouraged me to move, explore and made sure that I would travel and experience the world.
Who is the most inspiring/ creative/ fun photographer you have worked with?
Seb Winter and Rankin. They're both great photographers and I'm very happy with the pictures.
As part of your job you get to travel a lot. What is your favourite destination?
I think London is still my favourite destination. It feels like home and there is much fun stuff going on. I also really like Sydney so far. People are very friendly and the contrast of the beach and city is great!
Being on camera requires great skin. What tricks or trade secrets can you tell us that work for you?
My skin reveals my lifestyle. As soon as I eat unhealthy, and don't sleep enough my skin looks dull. But as long as I drink loss of water and herbal teas and I sleep enough and eat healthy, my skin has a healthy glow.
What is your must have item for the Summer season ahead here in Australia?
Shorts (great for nice weather and castings ) a white bikini ( no explanation needed ). A dress that I can wear for day and night time (I love dresses that you can easily dress up with some heals and a clutch, very easy when you don't have much time).

www.dejatheband.com View all girls

Things you should know about Claire Rayner:

Tell us how you got your big break in the industry?
I don't really think that there was one big break- mostly lots of little accumulative breaks! However the biggest break was probably Warner/Chappell attending our showcase performance in May, which has led to very exciting things...
You've worked as a model, radio host and now singer. Are you still pursuing all three avenues?
I have been a musician my whole life, so pursuing a career in music has been the natural path for me to take. Through music I can be myself, no matter what form that takes, and I find that to be the most fulfilling thing.
Describe your style in one sentence?
Hair from the turn of the last century (1900), 1950's makeup and vintage clothes with an Australiana twist
You are very passionate about your work with Wildlife Victoria, tell us a little bit about this?
I have been volunteering as a Rescuer and Foster Carer for Wildlife Victoria for four years. In between playing in DEJA and finishing my Arts/Music degree I am mother to numerous baby possums and care for other sick or injured native animals. I absolutely adore our native wildlife and am so inspired by their courage and strength. I hope that as time goes by I can educate more and more people about the amazing creatures that we are blessed with here in Australia.
Do you have any exciting projects in the pipe works at present?
DEJA (my band) are currently working on a debut album... Very exciting, watch the website for more updates! www.dejatheband.com
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Music, art, nature, and the animals that I care for.
In an industry that is so hard to crack, how do you stay focused?
I just try to stay optimistic and not give in to disillusionment or despair. You have to really believe in what you're doing to last in the music industry.

At 27 LA based Amy Nadine made a life changing decision, she walked away from her 9-5 job and decided to pursue her passion in make-up.

www.thebeautydepartment.com View all girls

Things you should know about Amy Nadine:

How did you carve your way into the world of fashion and cinematic make-up?
At 27 I realized I was working for the weekend so I made a list of the things I was most passionate about (make-up, politics, Pro Basketball) and tried to figure out which one I could make a living doing. I decided to go for make-up. I was almost ten years older than most of my class mates but instantly knew I found my calling.
Do you have any exciting projects in the pipe works at present?
I just launched a beauty site with Lauren Conrad and her hair stylist Kristin Ess called www.thebeautydepartment.com and that keeps us very busy with photo and video tutorials! I'm also doing Rachel Bilson's make-up for the Teen Choice Awards on August 7th.
In the city known as La La land, what do you do to stay focused and grounded?
I live at the beach so I commute 20 minutes into Hollywood, then come home, smell the ocean air, exhale, go for a hike in the Santa Monica mountains with my dogs or for a run with my husband on the beach and leave the La La back in La La Land!
Part of your job requires early starts and late nights - what are your make up essentials to keep your face fresh and vibrant?
I love hydrating mists throughout the day, try to get monthly facials and do my own home facials in between. Then to fake a fresh face when I'm sleep-deprived, I love a peach cream blush (Tarte Cheek Stain in Tipsy) and a pink lip balm (Givenchy Magic Balm) with extra coats of mascara (Covergirl Nature Luxe Mousse Mascara).
What is the must have item in your make-up bag this season?
Black liquid liner... cat eyes continue to be my most requested look from my clients.

Sarah Hankinson

Illustrator/Artist

Why she's GOT it:

After graduating from studying Illustration in 2004, Sarah has gone on to have her work appear in many publications and has exhibited in solo shows in Melbourne as well as in various group shows across Australia.

www.sarahhankinson.com View all girls

Things you should know about Sarah Hankinson:

How did you get started in the industry?
I have always loved drawing and was tossing up between studying graphic design and fine art at university, when I discovered illustration. To me, it is the perfect combination. After studying I spent a lot of time marketing myself until I got my first big break - an illustration in Girlfriend magazine. This opportunity helped to expose my talents to a broader audience. I found my niche in fashion illustration and slowly started to get more work, while constantly exposing my illustrations to potential clients
Describe your creative style?
I use a combination of mixed media and traditional techniques to create fashion based work that is pretty, feminine and striking. I love to incoperate watercolour or ink to a line based drawing and aim to create a piece that is balanced in light and dark, thick and thin lines.
What's your advice for aspiring illustrators?
Be motivated and dont give up! sounds cliched but its true. You have to really love illustration and be passionate to make it work as it can be very taxing. Develop a style that is unique to you and don't be afraid to contact clients you would like to work for. I also think its important to have a website set up so potential clients can see your work. It takes time to get yourself out there but the rewards are more than worth it.
What are your aspirations/goals for the future?
I want open myself up to more styles of illustration other than fashion and experiment with different mediums and techniques. Eventually would love to travel to Barcelona and New York and work from studios there whilst meeting future clients and agencies.
Your illustrations on your website feature beautiful fashion illustrations - why is this your passion?
I am passionate about creating beautiful imagery and really just fell into fashion illustration. I love to capture the beauty of the female form and i draw inspiration from fashion and beauty photography.
Do you have an exciting projects and/or exhibitions in the near future?
I would love to create an art book of my illustrations that coincides with an exhibition at some stage later this year and of course I have another Portmans wall mural on the horizon which I'm very excited about!

Cara
Stricker

Photographer

Why she's GOT it:

From music videos to magazines, when it comes to photography Cara Stricker shoots from the heart.

http://www.carastricker.com View all girls

Things you should know about Cara Stricker:

How did you get started in the industry?
I was 21, in my second year university, when I shot my first commercial music video. From then on I was completely freaked out by the large-scale production of film that I offset it by shooting stills. It seemed an immediate result for a visual outlet. I loved the simplicity. Ever since then it"s been a balancing act between the two loves.
How do you perceive beauty?
When you see it, you can"t forget it.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
People, and walking alone.
Travel seems to define much of your work. What is the most interesting destination you have been to?
Black Rock Desert, Nevada, for Burning Man. It was like all my dreams collided, and projected in the middle of nowhere. America is such a transformational, warped environment. Every hour, driving toward Nevada, the scenery completely changes, from thick forest, to cliffs, to desert, to lakes, its endless.
What is one of the most interesting jobs you have worked on?
I find that the next job, and the one after that, and the one after that, always seems to be the most interesting job I am working on.
What do you wear when you are working?
My favourite black boots, a T back singlet, and jean shorts/jeans.
What is some of the most insightful advise you have been given?
Shoot from your heart.

Nadia
Townsend

Actress

Why she's GOT it:

From the streets of City Homicide to staring on the big screen opposite Nick Cage, Nadia Townsend is an actress going places.

View all girls

Things you should know about Nadia Townsend:

The Victorian College of the Arts is one of the most prestigious intuitions to study art, how did this experience widen your horizons?
Being at VCA opened my eyes to a lot of new concepts that I am still trying to put into practice. It was one of the most passionate and artistic communities I've had the good fortune to be accepted into.
How was it working alongside Nick Cage?
Working with Nick was awesome, I was studying at the VCA at the time and the gig paid for my schooling. It was a bit of a kick, sneaking out of dingy rehearsal rooms to work on a big budget film set.
Your best friend is Rose Byrne. Is there a sense of healthy competition between you two?
Rose and I are in a different league. I'm super supportive and proud of her and she of me. We have always and still do vehemently debate ideas about acting and compare stories about the industry.
Any exciting projects coming up?
The Zombie Monologues, a short film I associate produced and starred in, is doing Australian and International festival rounds and is the process of being developed into a television series.
What's your advice for aspiring actors?
Stay calm. Take a deep interest in everything around you. And try to avoid self-obsession.

Tell us about your studies?
I did a combined degree in Fashion and International Studies at UTS. In that time I spent a year living in Milan on exchange where I interned at the Vivienne Westwood press office.
Describe your creative style?
Constructed, colourful, more is more. I like to create impact with the images and films I work on and go beyond the conventional.
Tell us about your blog and what it features?
It has behind the scenes pictures from the photo shoots and fashion films I create for the main website ABSORB. I also post things about people I collaborate with and events like fashion week.
Who do you think is a Girl that is going places at the moment?
Two that I have worked with a lot - Maja Baska, an amazing photographer, and Chereine Waddell, a super creative makeup artist.
Film is a very influential part of your life. What is your all time favorite movie?
I have been developing fashion films since last year, which has been a new and consuming process. It changes but I still love Baz Lhurman's Romeo + Juliet - for the art direction, and the emotion.
Can you offer any advice to other creative minds?
Look at things outside of your area - sometimes the most interesting ideas come out of things with the least relation to your own industry.
